Sam Neill Dies at 78: Legendary New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for his roles in Jurassic Park and Peaky Blinders, has died at the age of 78 in Sydney, Australia, according to a statement released by his family on Monday.

“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing,” the family said in a statement posted on the actor’s official Instagram account, using the Māori term whānau, meaning extended family or community.

The statement added that Neill’s death was “sudden and unexpected,” while noting that he had remained cancer-free in his final months.

Neill had previously been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. In April, he publicly revealed that he was in remission and free of cancer after undergoing treatment.

“Sam was surrounded by his loved ones and passed away peacefully with the dignity that defined his life,” the family said in its statement. They also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the medical team at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for the compassionate care provided during his final days.

The family said additional details would be shared at a later time and requested privacy as they cope with their profound loss.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Neill appeared in dozens of acclaimed films and television series across multiple genres. His notable credits include the Oscar-winning film The Piano, though he is most widely recognized for his unforgettable portrayal of Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster Jurassic Park.
