From The PTL Club to Heritage USA
Jim Bakker and his then-wife, Tammy Faye Bakker, launched The PTL Club in 1974. What began as a Christian television program eventually grew into a major religious media operation.
The ministry also became associated with Heritage USA, a large Christian resort and theme park that attracted visitors from across the United States.
Scandal That Changed His Career
Bakker’s career took a dramatic turn in the late 1980s when allegations surfaced over the financial practices of his ministry.
In 1988, he was indicted on federal charges involving mail fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy. Prosecutors accused him of misusing ministry funds and misleading supporters.
Bakker was also accused of sexually assaulting church secretary Jessica Hahn. He denied the rape allegation and said their encounter was consensual. Questions were also raised over money paid to Hahn in connection with the incident.
Following a five-week trial in 1989, Bakker was convicted on the federal charges.

Prison and Later Years
Bakker was initially sentenced to 45 years behind bars, although the sentence was later reduced. He was released from prison in 1994 after serving roughly five years.
During his imprisonment, Tammy Faye divorced him. She later married businessman Roe Messner in 1992.
Bakker eventually rebuilt his life and returned to Christian broadcasting. In 1998, he married Lori Beth Graham. The couple later adopted five children.
Family and Cultural Legacy
Jim and Tammy Faye had two children together, Jay and Tammy Sue.
Their story also returned to the spotlight decades later through the 2021 biographical film The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which featured Andrew Garfield as Jim Bakker and Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye.
Bakker’s life remained a controversial chapter in the history of American televangelism, marked by both the rise of a major Christian broadcasting empire and the scandals that ultimately brought it down.
