The Love Hypothesis Review: A Fun Rom-Com That Packs More Emotion Than Expected

The Love Hypothesis Review: I went into The Love Hypothesis almost completely blind. I hadn’t read Ali Hazelwood’s novel, followed the book’s fandom online, or even taken the time to find out what the story was about. My only expectation was to watch an easy, feel-good romantic comedy.

What I got was a film that turned out to be considerably more engaging than I expected.

The biggest reason is its characters. Lili Reinhart plays Olive, a character who feels relatable without trying too hard to be likable. Her insecurities, ambitions and emotional struggles are handled naturally, which makes it easy to invest in her journey.

But one of the things I enjoyed most was Olive’s friendship with Anh, played by Rachel Marsh. Their relationship feels like a genuine friendship rather than something included simply to move the plot forward. They trust each other, support each other and are clearly willing to make sacrifices when needed.

That chemistry extends to Olive’s larger group of friends as well. Their conversations and interactions feel comfortable and lived-in. Because these relationships are established so well, the audience gets a reason to care about Olive before the romance even becomes the main focus.

The Love Hypothesis Review

Adam and Olive Bring the Comedy

The film finds its comic rhythm almost immediately.

Adam Carlsen, played by Tom Bateman, is known around campus as “Dr. Evil,” and it is not difficult to understand why. He is intimidating, blunt and almost completely uninterested in pretending to be nice.

His deadpan attitude and brutally direct comments provide many of the film’s funniest moments. At times, his personality even brings Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory to mind—particularly because Adam seems determined to keep emotions out of every situation.

Of course, the audience quickly gets the sense that there is more going on beneath that cold exterior.

The fake-relationship premise isn’t exactly new, but The Love Hypothesis gets enough mileage out of it. Olive and Adam’s conversations, awkward encounters and growing chemistry keep the familiar trope entertaining.

Rather than rushing their relationship, the movie allows their dynamic to develop gradually. Their banter becomes more natural as the story progresses, and what begins as a convenient arrangement slowly becomes something neither character can completely control.

The Story Goes Beyond Romance

I’m avoiding major spoilers here, particularly because the film works better when you don’t know everything that is coming.

There is, however, a significant development toward the end that completely changes the emotional tone of the movie.

The sequence genuinely made me angry and upset. But that reaction doesn’t feel accidental. The filmmakers deliberately use the moment to move the story beyond its romantic-comedy framework and address a serious issue.

It’s difficult to discuss that part in detail without giving away an important plot point, so I’ll leave it there.

What I appreciated was that the film didn’t treat the subject as a simple plot twist. It brings attention to an issue that can have very real consequences and that is still not discussed openly enough.

That gives The Love Hypothesis a little more weight than a typical fake-dating romance.

Performances

The cast is one of the film’s biggest strengths.

Lili Reinhart gives Olive plenty of warmth and vulnerability without making her character feel helpless. She also handles the more emotional portions of the story convincingly.

Tom Bateman has fun with Adam’s personality. His performance combines arrogance, dry humour and a quieter emotional side that gradually becomes more visible. That contrast helps make Adam more interesting than the stereotypical grumpy-romance hero.

Rachel Marsh also deserves credit for making Anh feel like an important character rather than simply Olive’s best friend. The supporting cast adds plenty of energy to the movie and helps create a world that feels larger than just the central romance.

Final Verdict

What surprised me about The Love Hypothesis is how easily it moves between different tones. It has the jokes and romantic chemistry you’d expect from a rom-com, but it also spends time developing friendships and exploring a much more serious emotional subject.

The fake-dating setup may be familiar, but the performances and chemistry give it enough personality to work.

I enjoyed the movie enough that I ended up ordering Ali Hazelwood’s book immediately after finishing it. Now I’m curious to see how closely the adaptation follows the novel and what has been changed for the screen.

For viewers looking for a romantic comedy with good chemistry, genuine friendships, plenty of humour and a surprisingly serious emotional side, The Love Hypothesis has more to offer than its familiar premise suggests.

Rating: 7/10

About The Love Hypothesis

The film is adapted from Ali Hazelwood’s New York Times bestselling novel and follows Olive, a Ph.D. candidate who is focused on building a career in academia.

Things become complicated when Olive learns that her best friend Anh has developed feelings for Jeremy, someone Olive used to have a crush on.

In an impulsive attempt to convince Anh that she has completely moved on, Olive kisses Adam Carlsen, an intimidating professor known for his difficult personality.

What starts as an unexpected kiss soon turns into a carefully arranged fake relationship. Olive and Adam establish their own rules and boundaries, believing they can keep their arrangement under control.

But as they spend more time together, the line between pretending and actually falling for each other becomes increasingly difficult to ignore.

And eventually, Olive has to face a question she never expected to take seriously: is taking a chance on love worth the risk?
